Background Information

Diagnosis

The majority of renal cancers are detected incidentally during imaging for unrelated symptoms or abdominal diseases.

Management

Disclaimer:

NICE guidance specifically addresses RCCRenal cell carcinoma. For non-specialist learning, this distinction has limited impact on core management principles.

Prior to the recently published NICE NG256 guideline (Mar 2026), most teaching (including this article) was based on EAUEuropean Association of Urology guidelines, which emphasise TNM staging. Traditionally, a 7 cm cut-off was used to guide surgical approach (partial vs radical nephrectomy). Current NICE guidance instead emphasises individualised decision-making based on tumour size, technical feasibility, and patient factors.
