Cardiac Arrest and Advanced Life Support (ALS)

Cardiac arrest is the sudden cessation of effective cardiac activity, leading to loss of circulation, unconsciousness, and absent breathing. Advanced Life Support (ALS) builds on basic life support with defibrillation, airway management, intravenous access, and emergency drugs to improve the chance of return of spontaneous circulation.

This topic is based on current guidance from the Resuscitation Council UK.

Background Information

Management

ALS interventions take absolute priority in cardiac arrest. It is also important to check for reversible causes and treat them accordingly, but should not interrupt or delay ALS interventions.
